The Museum represents an important backbone in the development of tourism in the city of Konjic, and through its existence contributes to the promotion and preservation of the cultural and historical identity and heritage of the city of Konjic.

A Tradition Saved from Oblivion

Although the idea of founding a museum in Konjic dates back to 1974, the Konjic Heritage Museum was established in March 2011. The diversity and abundance of exhibits make it an unmissable place for exploring the past and natural heritage of the city of Konjic.

It is located in the heart of the historic city center on the left bank of the Neretva River, next to the old bridge. The motivation for its founding was to preserve the layered culture of great diversity and immeasurable richness from being forgotten and lost, and to present it to the wider public.

The permanent exhibition consists of:

A Venue for Various Cultural Events

The Museum represents an important backbone in the development of tourism in the city of Konjic and through its existence contributes to the promotion and preservation of the cultural and historical identity and heritage of the city of Konjic, as well as the preservation, promotion, and protection of traditional crafts.

The Museum serves as a venue for organizing various cultural events, presentations, exhibitions, and numerous other activities.

Museum Opening Hours:

April-October
10:00 – 15:00 monday-friday
10:00 – 15:00 saturday-sunday

November-March
10:00 – 14:00 monday-friday
(from November to March the museum is closed on Saturdays and Sundays)

The building housing the museum has served various purposes throughout history. Originally, during the Ottoman period, it was part of a han (inn); during the Austro-Hungarian era it housed a woodcarving workshop; and during the Yugoslav period it became the Fire Station building. For the purposes of the museum, the building was fully renovated, and the construction and equipping of the Heritage Museum was funded by the Municipality of Konjic, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, USAID, and SIDA.

The creative and constructive spirit of the inhabitants of the Konjic region, present on this land from prehistory to the modern age, has resulted in a rich cultural and historical heritage. For centuries, the people of the Konjic region shaped and created objects of both practical and artistic purpose from various materials, which is especially reflected in the products of traditional crafts — some of which have been preserved in their original form to this day and are displayed in the ethnological collection of the Heritage Museum.

Beyond material culture, the museum equally nurtures intangible heritage, introducing visitors to the spiritual and social culture of the peoples who have lived and continue to live in this northernmost part of Herzegovina. The exhibits of the ethnological collection display a portion of the preserved ethnological treasures of the Konjic region from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Thanks to the fact that this region has been inhabited for thousands of years, the archaeological collection — although still in the process of being formed — already offers replicas of exhibits from the ancient and medieval periods which, by their uniqueness and artistic and practical value, represent some of the most significant exhibits in Bosnia and Herzegovina, discovered at sites across the Konjic municipality.

The beautiful ambiance of the gallery space, where themed exhibitions are organized, completes the overall look and experience, and it also houses a library containing works by local literary authors.

The museum also honors the memory of the famous Konjic native, travel writer and caricaturist Zuko Džumhur — through the museum annex “Birthplace of Zulfikar Zuko Džumhur,” which is rich in details from the life of this great artist.

Today, the museum contributes to the development of tourism in Konjic and serves as a place of cultural gatherings and events. The diversity and abundance of exhibits make it an unmissable destination for discovering the past and cultural-historical heritage of the Municipality of Konjic. The permanent exhibition as well as the themed exhibitions are a true attraction for all lovers of traditional culture and the customs of the peoples who have inhabited this part of Herzegovina since ancient times.
