The Old Bridge – Ćuprija

A National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Harmony and Beauty over the Neretva River

The Old Bridge is a bridge that adorns the old town center of Konjic, spanning the timeless emerald beauty of the Neretva River. It represents an outstanding example of Ottoman architecture in the Balkans and is listed as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was originally built in 1682 as a charitable endowment of Ali-aga Hasečić. The Old Bridge in Konjic represents the last great structure from the Ottoman period on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Unfortunately, it was destroyed on March 3, 1945, during the retreat of the German army, after which a wooden structure stood for a long time, serving as a crossing from one bank to the other. In 1962, the bridge took on a new appearance when the wooden structure was replaced with a concrete one.

The Old Bridge was reconstructed between 2006 and 2009. It was ceremonially opened on June 16, 2009, with the support of the Government of the Republic of Turkey. Precisely crafted stone blocks adorn the lower sections of the bridge, whose solidity withstands all hardships, while the upper part is adorned with travertine stone, worked in a way that ensures the harmony and beauty of this structure.
